Peter Wiegold is renowned as a conductor of 20th and 21st century and traditional repertoire, as well as for his improvisation and collaborative work with orchestras and ensembles. The current British contemporary scene provides the ideal setting for combining these interests.
Recent work includes conducting multi-forced project, “Anthem for Northumberland”, Northern Sinfonia and Nitin Sawhney at The Sage, Gateshead (2006). “Mouth, Feet, Sound” with bcmg, including Berio’s Accordo for four wind orchestras; The London Sinfonietta at Aldeburgh Festival 2005 (Maderna, Serenata per un satellite), and Southbank Sinfonia at Cadogan Hall (Bach, Mozart, Elgar, Steiner). Peter opened the Cologne Triannual Festival in 2007, with a performance of Berio’s Accordo. 2007 also saw Peter make his Proms debut, conducting his work “He is Armoured Without” and he directed his new opera ‘The End of the Line’, premiered at Manchester Piccadilly Railway station by 150 performers from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2009.
Peter Wiegold has been a regular conductor of the Composers’ Ensemble since the 90’s; with concerts at venues and festivals such as Dartington, South Bank, Brighton, Bath, Darmstadt, Salzburg, Holland and Macedonia. In the summer of 2002 he directed the Composers Ensemble in a Proms Portrait of Pierre Boulez in the presence of the composer. He conducted , Gateshead, in a multi space new work of Piers Hellawell. He has broadcast as a conductor many times for the BBC and has also recorded for Hesse Rundfunk, Germany and CBC Canada.
He has conducted the London Sinfonietta, The Northern Sinfonia at the opening night of The Sage, Southbank Sinfonia ( as Associate Artist), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ( new music group ‘Sharp Edge’) and regularly as Associate Artist of bcmg, The Endymion Ensemble (Young Composers’ Prom 2006), Joensuu Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia and Orchestra Camarata Labacensis, Slovenia. Peter Wiegold founded and directed Gemini for ten years and currently directs his own ensemble notes inégales.
